Resources

(This section is Under Development)

In this section, the OBLN is pleased to provide resources to support the work of Employment and Training professionals in their efforts to work more effectively with employers in assisting people with disabilities to secure employment and advance in their careers. (Please feel free to email us with additional resources.)

These resources should be particularly useful for Disability Navigators, Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors, Job Developers, Special Education Teachers, and people in similar roles.

Tools for Educating Employers

Many times, Employment and Training professionals have the opportunity to groups of employers on topics related to disability and employment. Here are some  tools that can be used to enhance your presentations.

 Job Accommodations

Resources:

From the Job Accommodation Network (JAN):
Handouts for Presentations - Titles include "Etiquette Tips", "Web Site Accessibility", "Tax Incentives", etc.
Accommodation Fact Sheets - Separate fact sheets on a variety of specific disability types.
One-Stop Presentation - A PowerPoint presentation on the usefulness on JAN to Navigators and other One-Stop staff.
JAN for Rehab Professionals - A PowerPoint presentation on the usefulness of JAN to Rehabilitation Professionals.
How Employers can use JAN - Eight-minute online video and PowerPoint presentation on how Employers can best accommodate employees and comply with the ADA.

Attitudes and Misconceptions

Research and experience have demonstrated that many employers are hesitant to hire employees with disabilities because of a lack of knowledge or because of misconceptions about disabilities and/or accommodations. For similar reasons, they can also be hesitant or reluctant to accommodate employees who acquire disabilities. Effective employer education can help to overcome this.

Resources:

Available in our Store:
The Ten Commandments of Communicating with People with Disabilities - (26-minute video) While focusing on disability "etiquette", the video also delivers a compelling portrait of people with disabilities as competent, contributing, and affable participants in the workforce.
